The Cabo de Gata Nature Park can be easily reached by car and depending on where you want to visit is a only short drive away - Agua Amarga 35mins, San Jose and Las Negras 1hr. Once there you can scuba dive, kayak, surf, swim or just chill.
In spring, autumn and winter there are many possible excursions into the surrounding region. Almeria has a richly varied geology, history and architecture. Picturesque villages, some of them World Heritage sites, the Moorish fort in Almeria, the archaeological site of Los Millares as well as a phenomenal range of the world's geological formations can all be found locally.
Sorbas and Nijar are nearby towns in which a number of different handicraft and artistic workshops can be visited and shoppers will enjoy browsing the wide range of Moroccan and Andaluz ceramics, hand woven baskets and rugs on offer.
Hikers and ramblers will get as much enjoyment walking in the desert of Tabernas, rambling along the coast, or hiking into the Alpujarras. Climbers will find countless routes both shaded in summer and sunny for those winter climbs. Skiing and snowboarding in the Sierra Nevada can be combined with a visit to the historic city of Granada.
Open-water diving licences can be obtained following a 6-7 day course in Carboneras.
Other attractions include Caving in the Karst Nature Park close to Sorbas and taking to the air with paragliding and ballooning. A very special excursion is a 3-day trip to Fez in Morocco, catching the ferry from Almeria.
